    A Bridge Too Far

    There is a bridge too far.
    It crosses, brave, a watercourse;
    a steel structure, strong,
    unmoving though the years be long.

    Too far, this bridge, to cross
    on foot or even bicycle;
    one must take a train,
    or cars are fine, but so mundane.

    So far, this bridge, it holds,
    kept in place by pile caps
    and beams of iron deep,
    rooted where the fishes sleep.

    But bridges, someday, rust.
    Sadly, too, for on that side
    is love. So I must cross,
    or all will be regret and loss.

    In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

    Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
