A Love Complete and Pure
When I was young, hurt and confused
There was one thing of which I was sure,
That I was truly destined to find
A love complete and pure.
For years I waited patiently
Praying each night and morn.
And finally I found my destined love
On the day that you were born.
I can still remember clearly
The first time I saw your face.
And the scared commitment I made that day
To always keep you safe.
I vowed to love you and teach you.
To keep you healthy, happy and free.
But I never dreamed on that very first day
There were things you would teach to me.
But through the years as I've watched you grow
I've learned so much from who you are,
A mixutre of wisdom, humor and wit
And the courage to reach for stars.
I know I've taught you many things
To help you through your youth.
But the things you have taught in return
Are greater and simpler truths.
You've taught me the power of following dreams.
And the magic of belief in ourself
You've showed me I never really was in control.
And that sometimes I hurt more than help.
I know now that my love can't protect you
No matter how pure or true.
And that I simply can't keep you safe,
That's a job for God and you.
So, now as I think of these lessons,
As I ponder all that has been.
When I suddenly realize it's Christmas again
And that you are really seventeen,
I wonder what waits in the furture
As you prepare for life on your own.
And I pray that you'll know that I'm always here
Your best friend, your mom, your home.
And if you should ever need extra strength,
A warm and dry place in a storm
Please know that my love is forever as pure
As it was on the day you were born.
There was one thing of which I was sure,
That I was truly destined to find
A love complete and pure.
For years I waited patiently
Praying each night and morn.
And finally I found my destined love
On the day that you were born.
