A painting of Jesus

A painting of Jesus

He couldn’t help but stare
at the painting on Granny’s wall
That gold rimmed magnum opus
The master of the room

She’d introduced him to that man long ago
he got older, and forgot that he knew him at all
he fell
to the depths of dependence
into the legion of transgressors
for the power of the gun
Granny had taught him better

Bound by manacles
Fated for the cell
he wondered
did He forget me too?

until he remembered
the painting
Of Jesus
on granny’s wall
He rose
he rose

Terrific. Good images, nice steady meter. This was very powerful.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
