deal the cards, hit or no?

deal the cards, hit or no?

congratulations
we've made it this far
we've made it this close
and yet we've grown so apart.
was tug-of-war always this much fun?
you've always been walking distance,
a teeny bit out of the way,
but nothing worth whining about.
im so glad we've accomplished the 9 steps forward
and 13 steps back.
i can feel your body heat
as we stand
next to each other.
we're there, together,
but i need an airline ticket to get any closer.
you've always been a phone call away
from my upside down, backward rolls,
i can meet you through a line
but i can't get to you when you're sitting
there,
just a hand distance away.
oh this game is wearing me thin.
i really need a do-over.
a blink and it's gone moment.
when i realize that we are indeed
together
and that this distance was another one
of the twisted stories
my mind creates.
before this ends
i must begin it again.
stay there,
im coming,
im almost there.
stop stepping away.
stop looking away.
stop hanging up.
just stop.

STOP.

this rope is rough.
im sure there are more splinters in my hands
then the words you've said in total to me this year.
but then again, almost everything outnumbers
our words,
our phrases,
that we shared.

im done.
the flags on your side.
stop pulling.
your call.

again?
or shall we call it quits?

ive always liked falling in the mud anyway.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
