Fallen Angel
Sent from heaven to earth below,
The old angel flew to and fro;
Oft he lent a helping hand
So those battered ones might bravely stand
Against the creatures causing woe.
“Love one another as yourself”
Came straight from the Book upon his shelf.
But no warning seemed to follow
That too much love might ring hollow
When not returned upon himself.
How could he know, this angel man,
That she could not love as much as he can?
Not all are angels whose comely face
Appears to glow with loving grace;
First she took his help, then ran.
He would back to heaven go
And leave the pain he found below.
But he’s not allowed to see the portal;
He’s become too much the mortal
Maimed by love’s lonely longing arrow.
The old angel flew to and fro;
Oft he lent a helping hand
So those battered ones might bravely stand
Against the creatures causing woe.
“Love one another as yourself”
Came straight from the Book upon his shelf.
But no warning seemed to follow
That too much love might ring hollow
When not returned upon himself.
How could he know, this angel man,
That she could not love as much as he can?
Not all are angels whose comely face
Appears to glow with loving grace;
First she took his help, then ran.
He would back to heaven go
And leave the pain he found below.
But he’s not allowed to see the portal;
He’s become too much the mortal
Maimed by love’s lonely longing arrow.
