Fatherhood

For L.J. Love, Dad When I looked into your eyes I knew you were the one
Baby eyes shined back at me and I knew you were my son.
I gave you my name because I hoped you would change
Things about me I didn't like, and things I won't name.
And when life has hit me hardest and I've fallen to the mat,
You pick me up, time and again, and I thank you for that.
You give me strength when I am weak; courage when I'm afraid
The will to go on and fight through the day.
The resolve and the patience to get through the night
Even though lately my nights ain't been right.
You give me the desire to aspire to be better than this
To give you the childhood that I had to miss.
You give me hope that my dreams if they be unfulfilled
Could be realized by you, in whatever field
You choose to endeavor just give it your all
And if you slip and you stumble I'll be there 'fore you fall.
To catch you and get you right back on that horse
Just like you caught me and got me back on course.
I helped give you life; you give me a reason to live
You've given me so much ; I've got so much to give.
