    Flames

    Low down beneath
    there is a smoldering pile
    of ashes
    That once burned
    high flames
    of passion.
    The flames burned bright
    So bright I glowed
    Now crushed is my heart
    so the flames have lowered
    lower
    lower
    to a pile of ashes
that are just a smouldering flame
of passion that once burned brightly.
So bright they could light the sky
    now they're barely visible
even on a cold barren night.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

    Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
