For Dido

For Dido

For Dido
I can see the deep ocean
touched by millions of dreams
and all the flying waves
reaching the moon
falling down to death.

Mountains born in fire
remind me of you
all along with the dry chapters
and the sparkling spring shower
blooming green, eternally flowering fields.

You know how to measure
every step inside my soul,
and something that just has happened
is already too late ahead.

If I had the power
to turn you into a dream,
I would create a slowly dripping drop of tear
that has never landed, I would
dream it, taste it,
never let it go away.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
