The gratification comes in the doing, not in the results.

The gratification comes in the doing, not in the results.

Re: The gratification comes in the doing, not in the results.

what is the point of a result if no ones around to recieve it.

a result is not a result if only experienced solo

the journey is great as long as it doesn't just turn to nothing the second the result is achieved..

good point

for example --- if a thought were not written down it would never become a poem- just a passing thought in ones head ..

the doing IS the result; what will be will be; what is, is

impermanence ---

like the monks who would make beautiful sand art - spend weeks - when all done -
destroy it --- so there is the flip side --

so we make a book - it goes on the shelf-

name up in lights -

legacy
fame
fortune

they can't even go to a restaurant anymore -- pictures end up on the web --

prisoners of fame ....

I agree with Dean and Dancing hawk that the journey is a prequisite to the result, even if the journey becomes the result. The contrary leads to the old saw that the ends justify the means, a Marxist-Leninist axiom.

Re: The gratification comes in the doing, not in the results.

To make it a bit simpler...I built a storage shed this summer out at the RV park where we have a trailer. I drew the plans, bought the materials, and single-handedly constructed it. I enjoyed every step of the project. It took me a month and a half, working on the weekends, to complete. When I was finished, I stood back and admired my artistry of carpentry. And as I stood there, I wished to myself that I hadn't finished it and that I still needed to add one more shingle, or board--because now...it was just another piece of property that one would see as a thing and not the pleasure I had in the creation of it...

Gogant --- I agree --
but we can't over build either -- just drive around and see all the for sale sign's--

every body gets excited that the economy will improve when they report new housing starts are up-- but why are they building new houses when there is a record surpluss of unsold already built houses and one out of 358 are in forclosure now---

i like your shed story and i agree -- thats why i like to write --

it take up little or no natural resources- i can do it anywhere and forever --

so we have the journey people and the journey with end result people --

thats a good thing

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
