Growing Up

Growing Up

Life is like a prison,
With padded walls and bars,
There's a guard at every exit,
So I never get to far.

I try so hard just to cope,
But as time slips I lose all hope.
I grow a little every day,
And wonder when I'll have a say.

I feel my life is never fair,
When will people go away?
There's so much that I want to share,
I gain more knowledge every day.

Before I know it I am grown,
The patience shown was worth the wait.
Maybe now I'll make new friends,
Or even go out on a date!

I think my future now looks bright,
I have many goals that are in sight.
I should have known right from the start,
That all these answers...

Were in my heart.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
