I Can Hear You Breathe
I Can Hear You Breathe
In….Out….
For hours, just the slow sucking of air
In…..out…..in…..out….
He came awake with no noise
His ocean eyes glowing blue fire
His face painfully radiant, no words, no words
Not old, Not Young, But somehow
Somehow
Somehow
Whole again.
Looking beyond me, his lips move,
speaking words I cannot hear to someone I cannot see,
Yes Yes Yes, the father nods, joyful in his choice….
In…..out…..in
The struggle an instant, his face tightens to a grimace,
a momentary tug of war, Body grasping for soul,
then comes the tender release…
His eyes zero, the beautiful into ash, the whole into husk
And with a sigh of relief, the final life ending Out... he was no more…
In the stillness
I slip my hand beneath him
Feeling his warmth
One
Last
Time.
