IF I WAS A SQUIRREL

I was sitting here a pondering just a thinking don't you see,
If I was a squirrel I could live up in a tree.

I could play in the branches and run round and round the trunk,
I could find a nice deserted bird’s nest and use it for my bunk.

I was sitting here a pondering just a thinking don't you know,
That if I was a squirrel I could play out in the snow!

I could run across the ground leaving tiny foot prints behind,
As I race to my feeder, on some pine nuts I would dine.

I was sitting here a pondering just a wondering you see,
If I was a squirrel a sittin in a tree,

Would I be afraid to jump from limb to limb,
And would I be afraid my stash of nuts to defend?

I was sitting here a pondering as it started getting dark,
If I was a squirrel would a dog frighten me with its bark?

Would I scamper up the tree and jump from limb to limb,
Or sit there on my limb and bark right back at him!

Now that I have pondered, just a thinking don't you see,
I could never live like a squirrel away up in that tree.

I will stay inside my house where it is always nice and warm,
And keep my dogs in their yard so the squirrels will not be harmed.

I will buy them lots of nuts and put feeders in their trees,
And watch them run around the trunks as happy as can be!

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
