    Lift Off

    On my way
    to the wedding.
    Waiting to lift off.
    Flying across the country
    is as ordinary
as walking to the corner store.

    I smell fuel.

    The captain comes on
    to announce
    a delay.

    He’ll let us know.
    I knew I smelled fuel.
I really should get my affairs in order.

    We take off
    Not too terribly late.
    The flight
    Uneventful.
    Already I have forgotten
    My affairs.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
