Mama's Boy

(Dedicated to Irena Bell Beebee 10/15/04)

Oh yes I am a Mama's Boy.
That's a title I'll wear with pride and joy.
I remember when I was young and a little bit too smart
that I took and broke my mama's heart.
What Mama did that day was right.
She made me stop and see the light.
That if you're going to do the crime,
you be prepared to do the time.
And the judge said, "one to two.
That's what I'm giving you for being such a fool."
And as they led me away,
I looked back and seen my mama pray.
Oh yes I am a Mama's Boy.
That's a title I'll wear with pride and joy.

And the day they set me free,
Mama was waiting at the prison gate for me.
And I could see in her tears of joy
that I was still a Mama's Boy.
But when the good Lord took her home..
I felt so all alone.
I got out her good Book to pray.
But in the distant I could hear my mama say,
"Son, we will meet again some day."
Now I've grown old and my hair it has turned gray,
But I can proudly say that I am a Mama's Boy.

I have to wipe away the tears when I read this...I have 2 boys...

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
