"Whalesong"

Alone in the twilight
at the dock of the bay;
my glittering tears will fall
softly to say:

My life is not over yet
I just need one more chance;
to enlighten my dreams
of true love and romance.

Unto the waves I peer longingly
with the wind in my face;
for my heart has now shown me
that this is the place,

Where a beautiful whale
sings a comforting song
to the sunset of glory
each new day belongs.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
