The Tempter's Fire
Soul of beauty, soul of strife
Tis' my struggle; here's my life
A wicked tempest stirs my soul
As I ponder Heaven's scroll
Within its pages shall I find,
Some balm to sooth my troubled mind?
The Tempter stalks me, goading on
His fury unleashed, my peace is gone
There is a fire within my heart
A Holy blaze that God did start
But there's another, darker flame
Which seductively whispers my name
A fleshly fire yearning for touch
A flame that doesn't need fueling much
Once ignited it's hard to stop
Needing an outlet, the blaze is hot
A path it seeks to feed the need
Realize desire; fulfill the deed
And though I strive with all my might
In vain, it seems that I do fight
Within my mind the stage is set
I face my foe to fight till death
And though he comes in like a flood
I face his rage covered in blood
Slyly, evilly drawing his bow
His fiery darts swift as they go
Hell on wings, his arrows fly
His gaze is high and proud and wry
Taunting, tempting, teasing he
This wicked imp exults in glee
And though his fire enflames within
I, on bended knees seek Elohim
For a seed of strength, a light of hope
A thread of faith to which I grope
Then stand my ground with shoulders squared
Repeat the words a king once said
You come to me with shield and spear
And dress me down with icy stare
But you are like the walking dead
For on this day I'll have your head
He advances still and glares once more
Yet not with savvy like before
I, now emboldened, heart on fire
For in my soul a new desire
To live and walk in purity
Possess my vessel with dignity
Steel in my eyes, my voice a thunder
Get thee behind me! Cease your plunder!
He balks and turns, begins to run
And I, in faith my victory won
Pursue and conquer, recover all
With grateful heart then I do fall
To kneel before Adonai once more
And with His touch my soul restore
For there's no doubt my Holy Sire
Would help me quench the Tempter's fire!
