This Graceless State

This Graceless State

Though proud to count myself a working man,
By this graceless state I will not be defined.
Though thoughts transcend the commonplace
I would not make a sham palace of the mind

No flighted discourse ever fed the starving child
No plough brought comfort to the weary heart
No poem ever built shelter for the homeless man
Nor can happiness be found tethered to the cart

Vast riches cannot replace the time exchanged
Intellect and reason cannot your death forestall
Seek not to separate your body from your soul
It is not division but love that makes us all

I am simply in awe of your power of expression. You possess all of the magical gifts of an enlightened poet! Have you published a book of your poetry, yet? I want to buy one!

Good poetic prose. And so very true. I love it! "Nor can happiness be found tethered to a cart." Like that.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
