    115 Washington

    Eating talk
    Doing so
    For the other’s eye
    Scanning the walls--
    In this room
    We live and lie,
    Breathe in same air
    Gone stale since yesterday--
    Along with the bread.

    We remember
    When grass was growing,
    Tall, green
    In our gaze
On the other side of the window.
    Inside we sit,
    we sit,
    In wait
    In want.

    Occasional
    Startled speak-
    Saying nothing so easily
    In too many words.
    Lost in waves of restlessness-
    And then just lost.
    We think together
    In broken buildings,
    Broken by us-
    Breaking us

    I cannot find
    A brush for my hair
But do I really need it-
    Do I care?
    Looking in mirrors
    They begin to stare back
Turn my stomach-if I alow the wrong thoughts
I lose myself a little more each time-
    Each meaningless opening in space
Where a moment lies and lies.

    Here we are
    Alone.
Drafty and dark is the room.
    All we want
Is for the other to light a match.

Lovely! I just lit a match.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
