BLACK OF NIGHT
Gathered around the bed in the black of night.
Three hearts cry out to those of might
Come forth and hold your children tight
They fear the darkness before dawn’s light.
Within the shadows our tears are known
Sorrows and nightmares of flesh and bone.
They hide in the closets and corners of rooms
Peeking out only in the light of the moon.
Terrible horrors are waiting to touch
They wait and they watch for the silent hush
To trembling children these creatures are real
Parents do not see nor can they feel.
Cold hands reaching to grab children’s limbs
Creatures howling and screeching
Upon the voice of the wind
Small eyes tremble and pray, they wish it to end.
Cries of the children break through silence.
Parents awaken and hush them to quiet
Holding them tight in your arms of might
Lull them to sleep in the black of the night.
