    Brave Souls

    Brave Souls

From the misty hollows and shallow graves,
To the fog filled banks of blood and rage.
Histories past of days long ago,
    Barrel cocked on the load.
The star filled flag shadowing those below,
As they fought to defend what we so dearly hold.

Freedom poured from these lips and flowed in blood; from toe to tips.
From a Revolutionary war, to the Civil war of brother-against-brother.
To being united against evil powers on foreign shores,
Where our own died defending us in these wars.
Sacrificing all they could give, so that you and I could live.

Look out across a sea of crosses on rolling hills,
Remember all the blood that was spilled.
Let us not forget these brave few,
Who sacrificed their life and what they
    And their families went through.

    Grass grows back, flowers bloom,
Buildings are rebuilt, but life’s are no more.
Faded memories and cross lined hills,
Are the only remainders of that time.

But in that flag that flies so high,
I give thanks to each brave soul,
With a breath and tear in my eye,
As I look at those stars and stripes,
    That so proudly fly.

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.
