The Unnecessary Chat Room

The fact that so much money, effort, and time, has gone into building and then upgrading the "Chat Room" is, in my opinion, really disturbing when there are so many "high priority kinks" on this site that should have had "top priority status". The chat room brings nothing of poetic importance, or user comfort, to this poetry site. And it's pointless to be redundant about what really needs to be improved to make this site efficient so that our time here is not wasted, and the chat room is a waste of time when our time should be spent reading, rating, and commenting on poetry and not on: "So, what did you have for dinner?", along with the other pointless conversations I have witnessed in Chat. I do not know the Administrators, so this in not personal, but their focus seems a bit blurred or not clearly laid out as to what makes a site work to benefit all. The Chat Room benefits very few.

Re: The Unnecessary Chat Room

I have visited once or twice - never used.
I really do not like chat rooms where disjointed conversations take place.
I prefer the forums or PMs.

Re: The Unnecessary Chat Room

As per my post yesterday http://www.originalpoetry.com/forum/view/topic/topic_id/434 we are working on main site features. The chat just happened to get done first. We had to implement a new chat system because the old one was a heavy load on out servers. We believe that the chat will be a very viral part of the site once we have time to add features to it. We have a couple neat ideas where users can share poems in chat. Along with being able to communicate through the whole site if you wish to.

So if your looking to see what were going to implement next please see my above post. grin

Have good dayexcaim

Re: The Unnecessary Chat Room

Sorry Clips, I have to agree with the other two. In my opinion, entended features on chat aren't needed now, but its done. I don't care for chat myself. I'm sure the people who use chat will enjoy it. The other improvements are eagerly awaited. I sure the powers that be know their targeted audience. Be well and thanks for listening to your poets, ken cool smile

Re: The Unnecessary Chat Room

It would be nice if the glitch in the system which prevents me from sending friend requests or personal messages could be remedied. I think the site community would be better served by adding alerts for new comments and possibly alerts for new poems posted by friends.

I believe resolving these issues would improve interaction between poets and make the overall experience more enjoyable.

Re: The Unnecessary Chat Room

i am not surprised that those who posted about chatrooms as being unnessery feel the way they do, as it is a two way form of communication that a lot of writers are not used to, it is easy to set up your own account, post some writings and rate others from the safty of being not in immediate direct communication, , chat rooms are not new by any means, that ham radio operators dx'ed (plus a lot of other jargon (and still d0
was the predessor of the chat, it is a tool of communication that is in real time, as much as a telephone or even the newer texting.
having been a sysop and a chat admin this chat is not bad as chat rooms go it is a feature standard in many paid membership sites, and over the last 60 or so days i have watched it go from a rude place to an actual civil place where writers can get live advice from other writers while they are composing, or an opinion before or right after they post.
it is organic and active and other than some of these esteemed writers postings and posted comments it is usually one of the first places new members go to find out how the site works, ask questions(esp if english is not their primary language.. friendships form there and a lot of reading, rating and commenting come from it
at different hours of the day there are different groups of folks in there all kinds of human communication goes on in there, and it constantly changes this site is a free site, which is wonderful as it cuts away a barrier to some folks who wouldnt get the exposure to other writers and that is good..
there are people who join this site with no interest in the weekly contest and just want to get feedback on their writings
there are some who do not write and enjoy reading others writingd
some feel the need to rate, dome do not, some only comment
and there lol are some who dont read but just rate, some who comment and dont rate some who just rtate
some who just chat
i have run into people who are writing in english who have better skills in their own language, i encurage them to post in as many languages as they can (as at times i compose not in english, but translate it into english, it is difficult, so i appreaciate the heroism in an english dominated international poetry site that is new to do so
THERE ARE SOME WHO EXPECT EVERY WRITER HERE TO CONFORM TO A "CLASSICAL EMPERICAL FORMAT" AND JUDGE HARSHLY ANYTHING THAT IS OUT OF THEEIR ESTETICAL LIMITATIONS AND CULTURAL FRAME OF REFRENCE, I HOPE THAT THEY WOULD MODERATE THEIR APPROACH TO THE CREATIVE PEOPLE HERE IN THIS SITE, OF ALL AGES, CULTURES ETC. IF THERE WERE ONLY CLASSICAL POETRY HERE, THAN ANYTHINGG PRE-hOMER, WOULDNT BE ALLOWED(AND THAT IS JUST WESTERN POETRY)
WHAT ABOUT bASHO?
lI-pO...

THIS IS ART AND CREATIONS FROM LIVING BREATHING PEOPLE IN THE REAL WORLD AT THIS TIME REPORTING WITH LESS BIAS THAN THE NEWS MEDIA EVENTS AND CULTURAL DEVOLOPMENTS THAT GIVE MORE CLUE INTO THE EVENT OF HUMAN COGNITION AND COMUNICATES IT BOTH TIMELESSLY AND AS SURE AS A TIMESTAMP ON A CERTIFIED DOCUMENT
THE DEVOLOPERS OF THIS SITE MADE A WISE AND GOOD CHOICE PUTTING A CHATROOM IN HERE. IT IS A WISE AND GOOD INVESTMENT.. I AM SHURE THAT IF YOU WISH TO DONATE TIME, SUGGESTIONS OR MONITARY RESORSES FOR OTHER AREAS THEY WILL ANDWER YOUR QUESTIONS AND READ YOUR COMMENTS.

Sorry to single this line out, my friend, but it begs to be elaborated...

Firstly, I donate quite a bit of my time in choosing to post my work, read and comment on other writers and to post concerns and suggestions in this Forum in an attempt to assist in the site's improvement.

Secondly, monetary resources( although I am not entirely against the idea) would contradict your approval of this site being- "a free site, which is wonderful as it cuts away a barrier to some folks who wouldnt get the exposure to other writers and that is good.." [originalmerlin].

In recent days I have read posts from many members who have decided to leave or are considering leaving due to dissatisfaction with certain aspects of this site. I'm not sure that any of those complaint had to do with the Chatrooms one way or another.

In conclusion, I grew up fixing and using CB radios with my father, I am a musician who prefers texting to 'speaking' on my cell phone. The Chatroom, in my experience, is slow(not so "live advice") and not all that popular the times I've tried it. I am not against the Chatroom and I am in agreement that many newcomers get a first taste of the community there. However, I also agree with the previous posts that there are more urgent concerns that should be adressed----- such as my inability to send friend requests or personal messages.... and personal pages disappearing; along with comments and writings......

just a thought.
(could be an excellent topic to discuss in the Chatroom, huh?)

Just a friendly note: if you see one of your friends missing. It's not that the site is broke its that they have decided to remove their account. When someone removes their account we have to remove all of the poems with it.
