Had I Have Known

Had I Have Known

When I said “one last kiss”,

I didn't realise you meant it.

Had I have known,

I wouldn't so easily have spent it.

I would have held it forever, us together forever

Anything would have been better

If it meant not losing you.

Had I have known

The words you whispered were lies,

Would I have carried on?

Would I still have tried, despite

The loss of connection? The dismissal of affection?

I knew it wasn't perfection

But I still listened to your murmured reassurements.

Had I have known

how much your absence would hurt,

I don't think I ever would have laid

In your arms so inert. I can still remember

The words locked in my lips, the memory of your kiss

Living in ignorant bliss...

Your hands on my hips that refused to stay -

I remember how you pulled away.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
