Harvest of Betrayal
What is this seed
-------that------
Once planted,
Grows with speed
Into an ivy
Of the deepest hues
of green?
No ordinary vine,
this one,
As this is a seed
Sewn not in the bounds
of nature,
But----
Embedded in the wake
of betrayal,
Deep in the fields
of the heart.
Travels and breathes,
And bears the bitter
leaves
That shadow even the
happy occasion
Of forgiving...
One would think
That the act of forgiveness
Is the foregone
conclusion
Of redemption.
Not so.
For this is the seed
of doubt,
Entwigs and entwines
without
The enhancement
Such as endows
The face of castle walls...
Instead, betrayal
has adorned
A heart with ivy
thick and thorned,
And all too often
the occasion to question.
And so---
To bring full circle
From when first cast out,
Reap what is sewn
----only further doubt:
Has that heart, then,
truly forgiven?
