    Holiday Cheers

     I often think about Easter

    The significance of the egg

    It’s relevance to the resurrection

Compared to what the bible says

    I often think about Christmas

And the old man Saint Nick

    How Santa Claus Isn’t related

    Causing much religious conflict

There are many things in life

    That doesn’t make much sense

    It’s correlation to truth

    Like how American money’s spent

    Though truth or fiction

    It serves a purpose

One filled with love and pain

    Take it all away

    Re invent the stories

    We’d all go insane

For the joy is in the celebration

    With family and with friends

In remembrance of all god’s soldiers

Who fought a war to win

A day of rest for comfort

To heal a sin sick soul

And as we gather beneath the mistletoe

A kiss of love we’ll impose

So the tree represents how tall we’re to stand

And the gift of life given

    While the egg represents fertility

And how we’re to keep living

So as we face this holiday season

    With bills piling high

    Enjoy this moment of happiness

For this too shall pass us by

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
