Poem Commentary

this poem is the affirmation of another poem of mine.

I Told You

I Told You

By Bobo Kalenga

I told you that we were good!

I told you that drying up our tears so fast

Doesn’t make our sorrow go away

I told you that one day we'll be free from the darkness

And we will stop singing our blues.

I told that summer was coming

And we will show our real beauty

I told you all of that and even asked you

To let us live with our eyes open

I told you that we were not strangers,

When things don’t matter but our colors do.

I told you that we wanted to keep our colors

Because summer is at the door,

I told you that we knew who we were and what we want.

I told you that we didn’t want

To be ignored while our tears caused Global Warming

But to be heard,

That we are not strangers

Or victims but survivors.

I told you all of that because

I knew that our destiny in men's hands but God's,

Look at us now, we blossomed by the first touch

Of the sun and He has justified

Us as survivals but not as victims

Of being Beautiful and Rich.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
