It's My Life

It's My Life

I always walk in others shadows,
Never in my own.

I never take my own footsteps,
But have someone carry me.

My parents' want me to be a doctor someday,
So that's who I'll be,
Even if I don't 100 percent agree.

They tell me things to do,
And of course I listen.

In my heart I'm saying "No,"
But my mind is telling me otherwise.

I hide in the bushes,
And the bushes hide me.

It rains all day,
And I stay inside,
Thinking,
Thinking about my life.

Finally I work up the courage,
To follow my heart,
And I say "This time, I'm walking in my own shadow, not yours."

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
