    Lost Love

    True Love Never Lived Here

He envelops me in a warm, familiar embrace as he whispers
Sweet lyrics into my ear, "I still love you".
Mind wades in the memory pool as passionate
    Kisses
are re-lived and our dreams of the
Future are remembered, it's too late for them to matter.

Months of separation have created a gap between us,
Never to be bridged, our issues becoming insurmountable.
My secret must be revealed to him, that innocence was
Lost to another in his absence.
My sin is deemed unforgivable in his eyes.

Anger and contempt quickly replace his
Feelings of love and tenderness, I once treasured.
Promises will never be kept; those memories will never be made.
Surprised at my unshed tears and no requests of forgiveness,
Pride allows him to walk away from me.  I feel no remorse.

Time heals all wounds, these words
Ring of validity in my thoughts.
Moving on was surprisingly easy to do.
Apart from him I learned the truth:
    True love never lived here.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
