    Mermaid

There is a glint in the water that I can just barely see
She comes up close to the surface and winks at me
Startled by the way she looks, I jump back
Thinking maybe it is one of those murderous fish on the attack

She smiles at the strange way that I must appear
I had to glance twice just to keep my sanity, she seemed so near
Her beauty was beyond compare, strange, but very nice
The water moved her wonderous hair and it was me she did entice

Coming to the surface she touched her fingers to my face
And on that day I lost my heart to this wonderful, water lady of grace
Now I pine away the hours, thinking of this life I would trade for free
Just to spend one more moment with this awesome Lady of the sea

Telling this story takes me away and under the Ocean Blue
Swept by the current and cleansed all anew
I think of all the things that I have and the memories that soon fade
I would give it all up just to see my lovely, lovely Lady Mermaid

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
