Mountains Tremble

Poem Commentary

I wrote this piece in 2001. I actually started it and laid it down before 9/11 and finished it after.

Mountains Tremble

Over valleys low, winds gust high.

Mountains tremble, tree leaves sigh.

Over waters glittering, birds fly free.

Sunsets mesmerizing, skies whispering.

Over mountains high, clouds lie low.

Rivers rambling, crystal springs flow.

Over fields golden, sun shines bright.

Morning arises, fading to night.

Over war-torn crypts, tears run free.

People gather, by land and sea.

Over new horizons, families climb.

Desperation prevails, precluded by crime.

Over dominating greed, truth cries out.

Justice is sought, found with a shout.

Over sacrificed lives, hope shines new.

Heroics displayed, if only by few.

Over terror and injustice, America will live on.

One nation under God, waiting the new dawn.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
