My fair-weather friend

My fair-weather friend

Yesterday
you were angry;
disturbed;
vexed with the world.
I took your turbulent mind
to my heart
and hushedyour gail-force soul.
You bashed my pride
and disrobed my innocence.
But I held on with my love
and helped restore
your calm.
I am your friend.

Today
I feel bad.
Complete disharmony
with myself.
No peace of mind
I feel irascible
and challenged.
You paused
at my countenance
and then fled.
Solitarily I stood the test
and hated your absence.

Tomorrow you'll peep in.
Like a vacationer
seeking beaches and white sand.
Looking for a clear coast.
The hiatus you took
was a space trip.
'You wanted to give me space'
Space instead of support!
The time I needed you most
you chose to desert me.
The mood in me
was too much of a bridge
and the strength(?) of your love
was not enough to cross it.
You chose to return
only when you thought
I could give you sunshine.
How come
you're never around to help
batten the storm?
Are you only a friend
in fair weather!?

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
