Poem Commentary

my dad is an alcholic and he always tells me that im never gonna do anything with my life......my sister didnt get through high school because she was in and out of jail and group homes. My mom fears that I will do the same and this poem is just reassuring her that I wont.

My Promise

Im gonna stand tall
Im gonna hold my head high
And stand up on that stage
and make my momma cry

Tears of joy thats what they'll be
When the principal hands a diploma to me

We'll throw our hats
The croud will cheer
Ill come home and whisper in my dads ear
I did what you said I never could do

Now I can throw it right back at you
Now eat your words and wash em down with beer
the proof is right here
Its crystal clear

Finally and faithfully this battle is done
Finally and faithfully I have won
this is my promise that I will do good
This is my promise that ill do all that I should

                            DEDICATED TO MY MOM

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
