My US Marine Corp Greens

I pulled them out not long ago
My US Marine Corp Greens
I began to think of Parris Island
And a few other Marine Corp scenes
The coat so old had grew some holes
Those trousers are no longer in style
I must have had a small head then
My cover won't sit on my head by a mile
My badges look dull, my ribbons near torn
That's what these years have done
I could have joined any Branch of Service
But with the Marines, I feel like I won
I'm proud to have been a US Marine
And I've still got that MARINE IN ME
I often think about when I got off that bus

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
