    Poem Commentary

    homeless people

    People on the street

Most of us have a nice place to live
What would we do if it were suddenly
    taken away?
My heart grieves for these people
who have no home of their own

What would the homeless people give
To spend one night where we live?

They stir in the night on the streets
They live in boxes or under a bridge
wishing they had a place to live
Some of them are lonely vets who have
    fallen on bad luck
Because a sickness or some other stuff

Some nights they are so cold
They must find somewhere to sleep
Maybe a warm shelter if they are lucky
and get a warm meal to eat

The streets are rough and tough
I don't know how they do it
It must be terrible moving from place
    to place

We can lock our doors and close our
    mind but they are there

I hope and pray they will find a way to
get off those lonely streets and find them
    a home to stay
