One Night

In one night I saw my whole life change

In one night I saw the world tilt unexpectedly

You walked in and time stood still

I looked into your eyes and saw my future there

In one night I agreed to be your wife

I agreed to share your dreams and your life

In one night I conceived a son

And in one night I gave him life

In one night I found I could be happy in just your arms

For so long one night was enough

One night to have your love

One night to see your smile

One night to hear your voice

But soon I wanted more

Soon I wanted to see you smile every day

Soon I wanted to be in your arms all the time

Soon all you could give was just one night here

And one night there

Soon I longed for your kiss

And your smile so hard that it brought tears to my eyes

Soon I begged and pleaded for more of you

And soon I saw it would do no good

So I decided that one night of my tears was all you would get

But again I was wrong

I cried alone for so many nights

I cried until the tears would no longer come

On that night I knew it was done

On the night my eyes stayed dry

I knew I would no longer plead for you

On that night I knew I would not live for your smile any longer

On that night I looked into your eyes and the world kept spinning

On that night I could no longer look at you and see my future

On that night I realized I no longer wanted to share your dreams or your life

On that night I knew I could no longer be happy as your wife

The one night when I wanted all you offered me seems so far away tonight

The one night that made me so happy is just a distant memory

For tonight I am packing my bag

Tonight I am beginning all over again

In one night I am telling you good bye

In one night I am changing it all

And in one night I find I am brave enough to dream my own dreams

I am brave enough to set my own path

Tonight I walk away head held high

Tonight I know I have given my all

Night after night and

Day after day

We did our best

We tried to share it all

But our dreams were too different

So tonight I walk away

I wish you love and happiness

I hope your dreams come true

But tonight my life becomes about me

Tonight my dreams are my own.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
