Poem Commentary

This is a poem from the new poetry book set to be released this November 2009, "THe ID: The Art of Being Human, An Anthology by Alexa Leigh Corbett" it was written for my brother, may he rest in peace.

"A Life's Finale"

I will never forget the day
when it wouldn’t ever be okay
when they told me you died
I just sat down and cried

you’ll never see another Christmas eve
and you won’t say goodbye when you leave
no more birthdays or late night talks
no longer can we choose something to mock

you’ll never fall in love or get married
the experiences you’ll never have are varied
no longer will your parents dream of your future child
standing above your grave, these sensations seem wild

you’ll never complain about that Thanksgiving bird
and the way it’s supposed to cook, or so you heard
the debates you’ll miss and the jokes told
without you around start to feel old

but all that’s left when said and done
are the little victories and triumphs you won
the way you touched each heart
leaves a warmth reminding we’re not so far apart

I’ll see the places we went
reminiscing about time well spent
because it is true you don’t realize what’s there
until it’s gone and never knew how much you care

so may you walk into the light
allow your dreams to take flight
follow the angels past heaven’s gate
remember we can’t change fate

I still look for ways to make you proud
and when I laugh I still look for you in the crowd
but then I remember that you died one day
and now I know life has the greatest price to pay
