Poem Commentary

from "The ID: The Art of Being Human, An Anthology by Alexa Leigh Corbett" set to be released sometime this November 2009. In Honor Of Andrew Corbett.

"Those Final Wishes"

in your casket lay my knife
in death I found new life
in your pocket sits a last cigar
reminding me dreams will take you far

next to your side rests a book
to remind your soul of the memories it took
in a pocket lies the note of a friend
to show we stood by you until the end

on your feet are silver shoes
to prove the moments that matter we choose
on your body the expensive shirt you wanted
to depict the guilt of those now haunted

in the crowd tears shed
because it’s to here you led
as a single tissue expands to a pile
we realize you were worth the while

friends escort the casket along
there’s the murmur of your last song
sad faces piled up the road to the sight
here the heavy tears people start to fight

some question why now, it’s wrong
but others know your happy now, where you belong
so at the grave we all see
when we lose our way, you will guide us where to be

this grave is for us to grieve
for all of us to find what we believe
it is done in respect, made out of love
this one’s for you, hope you’re watching from above

Good work. I know the pain of losing a friend. You've put it to words nicely.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
