    Roses for Christmas

No pretty paper or ribbons of red,
this Christmas I'm bringing you flowers instead.
I know that you would have wanted perfume, but these smell quite lovely, these roses for you.
I know that you might have liked some red gloves, so these roses I bring you are red to show love.
I'm sure you would have preferred other things, so I hope you'll not mind these roses I bring.
I picked them with care and placed them just right.
One dozen red roses, a beautiful sight.
Although not as beautiful as the smile on your face.
A memory my heart shall never erase.
So, no pretty paper or ribbons of red, for this Christmas you're spending with Jesus instead.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
