The Family

The Family

we use to call them loved ones,
yea,,,, are brothers side by side
but what happened to the family
has a part of it just died ?

I look out on these busy streets
cant tell who is who.
What happened to the family ?
does that question bother you ?

we use to sing so many songs
standing round a tree,
but now the seasons changing
along with the family

the church doors now are closing
the gun shop has opened wide
with a sign that says a special
wont you come inside

I remember yesterday
football Monday night
but now the family disappears
it’s vanished in a fight
I remember yesterday
and that Sunday morning song
but now the church door’s closing
as the family says so long ,,,,

we use to call them loved ones,
but now , whose giving birth.
What’s happened to the family ?
what is it really worth ?

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
