The girl left behind.

The girl left behind.

I watched you from the corners of hidden rooms and prayed that you would not see me longing for you.
I watched you as you fell for another,
and wished so deeply that it wasn't true.

I watched how your heart broke
each time you whispered her name,
and I watched with tear filled eyes
as you always loved her with no shame.

I heard you call for her,
your voice filled with such a sorrowful song;
and my throat ached to cry out
"Dear Love, it is with me that you belong!"

I heard your anguisded cries
when she found her true lover,
and I wanted so bad to tell you that because of me
you had no need for another

I felt both mine and your heart die
when I saw you let her go.
For I knew you would never
in all this lifetime love me so.

And I felt as if my entire being was crushed when I saw the hurt left in you eyes, and I sadly find
that no matter how much she may have unknowingly hurt you or how much I have always secretly loved you,
I will always and forever be, just the girl you left behind.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
