The skating rink

The skating rink

The floor was lit as he skated ‘round

And the speedsters flew on by.

His first skate was too much work.

He was here and wondered why.

Then he saw her standing there

And there was no one in the place,

But him and her, that’s how he felt

As he gazed upon her face

She smiled his way, he almost fell!

He gave her back his best

His heart did not belong to him

Just the beating in his chest

She took his hand and said hello

And magic there transpired

She asked for nothing but his hand

But love and hope had soon conspired

That night he gave his heart away

He lost it in the light

That night he knew no other girl

Could make this feel so right

But this was never meant to be

She was looking for a friend

Someone to hold when she got lonely

A heart she felt she could depend

He longed to hold her all the time

She came when she was blue

And told him of her broken heart

A heart that loved so true

The years went by and all through school

She cherished their friendship so

And when he left she held him tight

She cried but knew he had to go

And so he went along his way

Their friendship ended there

But she was always in his heart

And he knew she’d always care.

Sometimes the sweetest things in life

Are not what we foresee

Sometimes a friend is better than

The dreams we thought could be.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
