    Trusted Soul

    I trusted my soul today,
It told me not to stray.
It told me to be true,
Even though I am tempted by you.
I have a lot to lose,
It all depends on what I choose.
So, I trusted my soul today.

    I trusted my soul today,
It said not to give it all away.
I didn't know what to say,
So I prayed, and prayed and prayed.
    And then I wasn't swayed,
Because, I trusted my soul today.

I trusted to my soul today,
It said I have it made.
    You bet I do,
It's not worth it to be with you.
I know exactly what to say,
Thank God, I listened to my soul today!

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
