    Vanishing Dreams

Afra promised to wait for me
    But Afra never did
Whenever I passed by her door
She dropped a veil and hid

Hussa from Telex room just called
    I have a telex note
The tax collectors back at home
    Are soon selling my boat

A bank note came also today
    Demanding I pay debt
I searched my pockets, but alas!
I failed to find a cent

I saw James Baker in my dreams
    So happy and in cheer
At last he was promised "support"
    For peace from "Dad" Shamir

Rabab, in tears, once said to me:
    "How painful is the plight
    Since immigration, though gives hope,
    Is loneliness and fright"

It is weekend, I sigh in relief
At last I hope to rest
But wailing winds and sandy storms
Put an end to my zest

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
