Poem Commentary

I wrote this 26 years ago, in 1983, and the form the poem takes, visually, conforms to the image of a vortex, reflecting the troubled state of mind which the words,in English, Spanish and French express. ...lg

When the conflicts of the mind
Cross the stirrings of the heart
           It is difficult to find
  Words to accurately impart
The quintessence of the dreams
That have gathered as a cloud
To obstruct the light of reason,
           So that every tenderness,
                  Every word, each slight caress
Soon becomes, or so it seems,
Less a comfort, more a shroud,
                   Like a dark, impending season.
                                         Y me puse a pensar
Que la vida es muy llena
                                           Y que muchas cosas caen,
                                                Y que la ternura dura
                                                 Aunque yo la negara.
                     Caring, sharing, not ensnaring,
This should be the ending sought.
                Enigmatic, not traumatic,
                   Paradoxic, not distraught.
                   L'emotion elle peut confondre,
                     Ou, tant pis, peut tourmenter.
                           Il faut utiliser du raison
                      Et, peut-etre se rapprocher
 Pour achever le tranquillite.
      Para me, este asunto
    Desarrolla como sueno.
Pues, la luz de la verdad,
Como sol en cielo oscuro,
     Trae respuestas por carinos
                       Pero no la solucion.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
