we have arrived

We have arrived

Memories come alive as I watched the crisis in the Niger-delta.
It brings the painful images of the late 60's;
The shooting, killing, wasting, ravaging and plundering
that was done to the great giant of Africa.
Ah! She sighs from her healing wounds.

Times and seasons have passed but the scars remain fresh.
Through thick and thin we have arrived.
From the scotching sun and endless rain,
We have arrived.
Though we were beaten, stripped and starved,
We have arrived
From aching sores and broken bones,
We have arrived.

We have arrived after we lost our fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers and relatives.
From far and near we have come.
We have come to create our world.
We have come to embrace our brothers.
We have come to become the great mother.
Together, we sing the song of peace to the land of hope and hospitality.
In diversity we stand, in unity we grow.
We have arrived.

With open arms we embrace every race and tribe.
Through pains, struggle and hard work,
We have arrived.
After four decades and eight years,
We have arrived.
Through thick forest and lush vegetation,
We have arrived.
We have arrived to obey the clarion call.
We have arrived, putting behind us civil wars, ethnic differences and tribal disputes.
Gradually and persistently we have woven our diversities into an unbreakable spirit.

The spirit of oneness
The spirit of hope and happiness
The spirit of beauty
The spirit of tranquility
The spirit of growth
The spirit of power and dignity
With our heads held high
We have arrived.
The unbreakable Nigerian spirit

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
