What Gave Me Away?

What Gave Me Away?

Can you hear it in my voice?

I know you can see it in my eyes

I know you can tell that I’ve cried

What gave me away?

Was it the quiver in my throat?

Was it the redness of my eyes?

Was it the tears on my shirt?

Was it my face filled with hurt?

Or was it the way I hurried to wipe away my tears?

Was it when my throat I tried to cleared?

Was it the false happiness in my words?

How about the smile that never quite made it to my eyes?

What gave me away when I tried to hide,

The tears that I’ve cried?

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
