    Y O U

    You are absolutely wonderful
the way you sit, stoic as Buddha, imperious, my young Leo,
    that power in your eye
    threatening to take me down.
I flit as a bee around clover
to taste your smile, your frown.

If you could hear the sound of yourself
    washing against my shore,
    you'd be more careful,
    my careless friend.
You wash over me like a torrent,
    making a river bend.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
