    Asking

    Lonely cries,
    endless tears,
    sob noises,
    that no one hears.
    drooping smiles,
    which we know are fake,
    all of this,
cause your heart had to break.
You give all your love away,
and there's none left for you,
    you keep asking yourself,
    "what else can i do."
When you need it the most,
    you don't get any affection,
    your heart seems to wander,
    in the wrong direction.
    When your memories,
are the only thing left to go by,
    you keep asking yourself,
    "why."
    When the time is right,
    you might get your way,
    you might not,
but you'll still have to take it day by day.
    When loneliness and sadness,
    is how you still feel,
    you keep asking yourself,
    "is this for real."

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
