Black History Month
2-11-09
February
They’ve restricted us to a month
28 days
29 every 4 years
So what should we do on these 28 days?
Should we designate a day for King, a day for Malcolm, a day for Barack?
A day for Rosa, a day for Carver, a day for Pac?
No… you can’t confine us to a month to celebrate our history, and other people should not need a month to study us
You cannot put a limit on Black history
I AM Black history!
And so is every Black man, woman, and child
We are the ones that make history
You might not ever read about me in any book or see a documentary about my life, but I am a part of Black history all the same
The same measure of justice that drove King to speak is in me.
So is Malcolm’s audacity, Obama’s charisma, Rosa’s courage, Carver’s innovativeness, and Pac’s creativity. I simply may express it differently, but it's all the same.
Black history is much more than a month
It isn’t only studied
We live it every day
