DADDY WAS A SOLDIER
Daddy was a soldier, and all his life he fought a war
Though Momma did all she could to love away his battlescars;
They were a simple people, they lived a simple life
But Daddy was a soldier so he held his fears inside.
Daddy was a soldier, a man who loved this land
In our yard there grew a garden tended by his wellworn hands
He might have been a farmer, dressed in military clothes
Cause Daddy was a soldier who grew the sweetest rose.
Daddy was a soldier and he told stories of the war
How he lost his buddies and earned his Purple Heart;
Daddy suffered nightmares that none of us could know, and he would pace the porch late at night, talkin' to God while he watched his garden grow.
Though Momma did all she could to love away his battlescars;
How he lost his buddies and earned his Purple Heart;
Daddy suffered nightmares that none of us could know, and he would pace the porch late at night, talkin' to God while he watched his garden grow.
