Deals With a Devil

Counting raindrops in the desert,
forseeing futures mishandled
Who knew when you rolled the dice you gambled
Lost earthen treasures pass down the line

Splashing water on filthy faces
worn by the land
torn by the hand that provides
all satisfaction, a bold transaction

Deals with the devil,
though Im not one to meddle,
boil the lakes of heaven, evaporating
the spoils of war and toil

Dogs howl as the whip cracks dawn
Midnights with eyes closed yet all seeing
seeing the mind thats bleeding
bleeding for a drop of rain

Convictions remain yet fade
not a man to leave his land
Waiting for god to extend his hand
For man don't live on dust alone

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
